Dungeon Room Index: Shrines

Image
Last time I did armories . (Sorry this one took a little longer than expected! I got images scanned and ready and realized I'd missed some of the coloring.) Shrines. I'm using this term as a catch-all for any kind of chapel or temple. Holy places. Places of worship and veneration. Here are the rooms: Shrines I started with "chapels", and just found that that term was too limiting. Constraints are good for promoting creativity, but "chapel" was a little too  constraining for me. So I went with something that could give me a little more room to breathe. Shrines are a wonderfully evocative kind of space. Unlike armories, shrines are almost anti-utilitarian; not to say that they don't fill a function (we're not doing the classic archeologist bit: "we don't know what it's for; it must be religious!"), just that they are wide open to including features for mostly aesthetic reasons, and that's always fun . (They are, of course, also a ...

Dungeon Room Index: Armories

(Last time I did Great Halls) This entry is a little shorter (but don't worry, I've already got another in the pipeline!). This time I'm going for Armories (and "Arsenals" etc.--rooms with weapons and armor and that sort of thing). Maybe even a bag of black powder; something more exciting than your conventional weapons found on any equipment table. Most objects in an armory may be found rusted or useless, but amongst the clutter is much opportunity for finding something helpful, or at least something int...

(Last time we did Libraries) I really like a big room, don't I? There are the reasons I already gave, but maybe it's that I find bigger rooms easier to diversify as well; I guess we'll find out what happens when I seriously attempt something smaller. Anyways, here are the rooms, with notes to follow: Halls, that are Great When I say "Great Hall", I'm using this as somewhat of a blanket term for a variety of large, open spaces: ballrooms, banquet halls, hallways (that are really big and grand; it's in the name!). Basically any space that is best served by a large, open area, especially one with high, vaulted ceilings. (And remember, if the ceilings aren't vaulted, they are quite liable to collapse! Better get some pillars in there...) With a room like this, I find myself a little at a loss at first to come up with new aesthetic flourishes; mostly it's all about the layout. However, there are a few things I find fit well in rooms like this: Fireplace...
